An important factor in sustainability is assuring that the goals do not feel overwhelming. Small, simple steps eventually lead to actualized goals. Here are 10 simple steps we can take to elevate our energy and rekindle our passion and joy for life:
01 SET INTENTIONS
The word intention is infused with possibility. It is open-ended and allows us the freedom to redefine our goals as we grow. Setting our intentions might be the most powerful step we can take in redefining our lives. Our intentions speak to our souls. Two important teachers in my life, Ron and Mary Hulnick from the University of Santa Monica, taught me to write this phrase after any list of intentions: This or something better for the highest good of all concerned.
It has been said that praying is talking to God while meditation is listening. When we take the time to enter the silence of meditation, we can hear the utterances of our soul…we can hear our intuition and allow it to guide us. Start with five minutes of silent meditation. If you tend to be distracted by thoughts or noises, concentrate on the inflow and outflow of your breath. The benefits of meditation are countless. A few examples include greater clarity, reduced stress and enhancement of the immune system. Feed your soul by listening to its whispers.
One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain. – Bob Marley. Music is healing to the spirit. Music has the power to shift our mood and incite a positive and visceral reaction. We all have our favorite styles and genres. Put on your favorite jam and begin the process of healing and enlivening your soul through music!
Movement and exercise are essential to our wellbeing. In honor of keeping our goals simple, do something that does not feel overwhelming. One yoga class a week, or walking around the block would do the trick. As you move your body, chemicals called endorphins are released into your system. These chemicals are known to reduce our perception of pain and increase positive feelings. Find a simple routine that works for you and implement it. Start small…it’s better than nothing at all.
05 HEALTHY EATING
This step can also feel overwhelming. The key to keeping our goals simple in this arena is to make one small change at a time. My nutritionist once told me to start by taking out one thing from my diet and replacing it with another. For example, cut down on sugary drinks, such as juices and sodas, and add more water to your diet. Another jewel I learned is called intuitive eating. Take into account how your body feels after each meal. If you feel good, the food is most likely a fit for you. If you feel bad, you might have to find an alternative. Food can be our best friend or our worst enemy. Feed your soul by feeding your body healthy treats!
06 JOY ACTIVITIES
As children, we did not have to be reminded to include joy into our schedules. We would give tickle-tortures and have laughing fits regularly. As we grow into adults our everyday responsibilities crowd our calendar, and our joy activities seem to dwindle. What makes your heart sing? What do you love to do? For some, it may be ice-skating, for others it may be dancing. There are as many possibilities as there are people walking this earth. A clue in finding your personal joy activity is remembering what you loved to do when you were young. Connect to that inner child and let her out to play!
Indulging in a massage, pedicure or hair appointment can be as good for the soul as it is for our looks. As we care for our physical being, we are expressing gratitude for our existence. There is a thin line between ego and self-love. In ego we are preoccupied with our own beauty, in self-love we see the true beauty in everything and everyone. As we practice our self-care, see the beauty in the people providing the service…see the beauty in the environment around you…see the beauty in the soul connections you are creating in the process. Your body is a temple, treat it as such.
Reading a positive book can be a treat for your intellect and your soul. There are countless titles to choose from. If a whole book seems overwhelming, just read a couple of pages a day, or find an uplifting article on the Internet. Scan through self-help, fiction or biography titles and see what calls to you. A personal favorite of mine is Paulo Coelho’s, The Alchemist.
An abundance coach of mine once told me that abundance is directly related to our sexual energy. A healthy sex-life does not necessarily mean having copious amounts of sex; it is a state of being that celebrates our sensuality. Napoleon Hill states that sexual people have a plentiful supply of magnetism. This magnetism is what attracts the abundance. So be safe and have fun!
Gratitude is the staple of feeding our soul. As we appreciate our blessings, so shall they spring forth in abundance. Start your day with a simple statement of your gratitude. For example, “Thank you for this new day to express my love.” Give thanks for everything. Our lessons are just as important as our blessings. Although it may seem harder to give thanks for the closed doors, it helps to remember that it may lead us to the perfect road.
Each of these simple steps of feeding the soul can lead to greater well-being and joy. Pick one or choose them all. The important thing is to select what you can handle. We all have our individual strengths. What can you do to feed your soul?
