Say “I Do” Without Going Broke

Q: I just got engaged (yea me!), and my fiancé and I want to have a really nice wedding. How can we do this in today’s economy? What are some ways to save money but still have a memorable day?

A:
Congratulations on your engagement and the upcoming memorable day! I know you are excited, but don’t allow your emotions to cost you a small fortune in this economy. Your wedding day is to create memories not debt. This day is a new beginning for you and your spouse, but as you begin your journey of happiness, remember romance without finance is a nuisance.

Bottom line: Say “I do” for half the price. Start by doing the following:

  • l Trim your wedding guest list.
  • Search for a reaso nable wedding dress; tryoncewed.com; woreitonce.com; idoidoweddinggowns.com.
  • Save on your engagement ring. It’s better to have the ring paid off before the wedding. Check out idonowidont.com, a site where grooms to be—or who used to be—are selling rings.
  • Choose an inexpensive date. (Major “love” holidays—Sweetest Day, Valentine’s Day—will cost you.) Sunday is the most inexpensive day of the week to get married.
  • Choose cost-effective invites and RSVP cards. Instead of mailing invitations, call or Evite your guests.
  • Decorations can be expensive, but everyone has a talented person in the family. Ask for assistance from the bridal party, family and friends. Your venue can be the most expensive, so shop around and compare costs.
  • Enter contests at bridal shows for discounts and free accessories.

The memories of this day are priceless, but as you say your vows, don’t add in “’til debt do us part.” Again, congratulations!
