Pregnant Road Rules
Being flight bound with a baby on board can pose special challenges for mommies to be. From navigating discomfort to using your preggos pass, here are a few tried and true tips to make traveling while pregnant a breeze.
1. Knowledge is power
Research hospitals in the area of your destination and make a list of key names and phone numbers you’ll need in case of emergency. Be sure to print out copies and keep them available in your carry-on luggage. If you are in your second or third trimester, bring a copy of your prenatal chart.
2. Avoid a snack attack
Growing babies need constant nourishment. Be prepared for longer screening processes, delayed flights and last-minute changes with healthy snacks.
3. Use your “Pregnancy Pass”
Don’t feel guilty about using your pregnancy pass, particularly in long lines like customs. Most people are sensitive to pregnant women, so if you have been standing too long, asked to skip to the front or request a chair.
4. Ask for extra cushion
Airline pillows and blankets are great as an extra layer of seat cushioning for backs and tushes on longer flights. Put your request in early.
5. Seat selection is king
Window seats can be fun, but those pesky bathroom runs make them impractical for you and seatmates. Be sure to request aisle seating to avoid the disruption when nature calls.
6. Flight time is the right time to play catch up
Your flight is a great time to catch up on sleep, your favorite pregnancy magazines or that 1,300-page parenting book. Remember to bring an eye mask and neck pillow if you plan to nap, and most flight attendants will have earplugs by request.
