Black Girls Lead Obesity Rates
The next generation of black women is at risk. The obesity rate for black girls increased, while other ethnicities decreased, according to a recent study by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
The study reviewed health records of more than eight million 5th, 7th and 9th grade public students in California between 2001 and 2008.
As of 2008, 38 percent of these students were overweight, 19 percent were obese and 3.6 percent were severely obese.
On a national level, obesity rates are just as alarming. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 17 percent of American children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 are obese.
In May, First Lady Michelle Obama announced her “Lets Move!” campaign, which shines the spotlight on childhood obesity and offers support to stop the epidemic. —Natelege Whaley
