The Art of Gregory Prescott

How did you get get into photography?
I have been doing photography for about 25 years.  I’ve always had an interest in all types of art and I use to want to be an illustrator.  I discovered the works of Herb Ritts and became heavily influenced by his work.  That is when I picked up a camera and found it was a much quicker and rewarding process over illustration.  I started shooting all of my friends for practice and developing my style and it just moved forward from there.

What would be considered your expertise/area of focus and why?

My focus with my work is to showcase diversity in art photography.  I shoot mainly portraits, editorial and art nudes.  My intention is to shoot the human body in a raw but classic timeless manner as a representation of the first creation and form of art that should be appreciated by all.  It is also to broaden the idea of what is beautiful and being accepting of others.  As humans, we come in all forms, colors, sizes, body types and lifestyles.  We should be open to embrace each others differences or at least accept each others differences, to help diminish the prejudices we have developed against people who are not like ourselves.
The industry is competitive.

What keeps you motivated?
The industry is very competitive these days.  When I first started photography, there wasn’t even digital photography; now everyone is a photographer with even their cell phones.  Photography is more accessible than what it use to be back in the day.  Social media is a platform that anyone can use to showcase and market their work, which is something that didn’t exist 20 or 30 years ago so that makes it more competitive.  But the passion of creating, the love of photography and the want of spreading diversity in the art photography world is what keeps me motivated in continuing to keep producing.  I really don’t know what else I would do with my life.

Tell us about your book that you published.
I created a 220 page coffee table book featuring my best best portrait and art nude photography work over the years.  Again it includes models of diversity which includes different race, body, skin, hair, age, gender and sexuality types.  It’s all about beauty in diversity.

What advice do you have a for someone interested in pursuing photography as a career?

Pursuing any type of art career takes perseverance plus developing a unique style that makes you stand out over others.  Once again with social media and competition being so great now, something has to set you apart from the others so creating a style and brand for yourself is very important.  Having a great eye is more important than having the best equipment.  It’s not about the camera, man.  It’s about the camera man, or in other words, the man behind the camera.

What photographers work do you admire and why?
Originally the photographer that got me interested in photography and picking up a camera is Herb Ritts but besides him, I love the works of Paolo Roversi, Andreas Bitesnich, Koto Bolofo, Bastiaan Woudt, Ren Hang and Thierry Le Goues.  I just really like their style.  I can relate to them and their work and find them all inspirational.
