What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

I was fortunate to work in corporate America for over 15 years. When I became a lawyer, I realized that the legal industry was very male-dominant.  I was inspired to build a thriving law practice as a black woman.  I’m also inspired to continue building upon a legacy I’m creating for my daughter.  Entrepreneurship is the best way to make my dreams come true.  I’ve been able to build a brand while laying the foundation for long-term generational wealth.

What was your journey like as a single mother?

As a single mother, it wasn’t easy; but it was worth it.  I became a mother during my senior year of high school.  I had a huge support system, getting help from both sides of my daughter’s family.  Finishing high school was a priority for me.  I still had plans to attend college.  My support system was vital.  After graduating from high school, I began working full time in corporate America while attending college in the evening. I set a goal to finish college within four years of graduating high school.  My daughter was my motivation!  Every decision I made was with her in mind.  After graduating from college, I was able to buy my first home.  I wanted to make my daughter proud, showing her that she can achieve anything by having faith and doing the work.  It was indeed a journey!

Tell us about your book.

My book, “Hearsay” is an autobiographical account of my life.  I open up about how I used the obstacles I faced as a single parent to motivate me to achieve my goals.  It’s an in-depth story about overcoming a teenage love affair, rejection and dispelling rumors.  I hope by sharing my story it will inspire and influence others to do what I have done; BEAT THE ODDS.

What was the most memorable feedback that you received from someone who read your book?

The feedback has truly been amazing!  I wrote the book with young at-risk teenage girls as my target reader.  I’ve gotten feedback from both women and men actually.  It’s been overwhelming to hear women tell me that my book has inspired them to revive dreams and goals they’ve had like re-enrolling in college to finish their college education.

How does it feel to have won the primary election for Judge in Birmingham?

I am still numb from election night!  Earning that victory was a dream come true on many levels.  Deciding to run for public office was not an easy decision.  I knew I couldn’t do it alone.  Once I began to feel the community’s support, that gave me the fuel I needed to run my race.  It was truly a wonderful feeling to have the overwhelming support of my hometown, Birmingham, Alabama.

If you win the election in November, what can the people of Birmingham expect to experience from your courtroom?

As a judge, I will make sure everyone’s voice is heard.  I will be fair.  It will be my duty to make sure everyone is treated equally in my courtroom.  I take pride in being a judge “of the people”.  I know who elected me and I believe everyone deserves their fair day in court.  No matter who you are, where you’re from or who you know, everyone will be treated equal in the eyes of the law.

What advice do you have for other young single parents?

Stay the course!  It won’t be easy, but it’s worth it.  Believe in yourself and make your child proud.  Set goals, achieve them; then set more goals!  You have more reasons than ever to be your best self.  Your family and friends are watching and believing in you; you can’t let them down!

What would you like to leave as part of your legacy?

As part of my legacy, I would like to leave the “audacity of hope”.  I want to create a legacy where the sense of hope and confidence are the foundation.  Not giving up and staying committed to a higher expectancy. I want people to know that as I overcame, you too can crush any obstacle life places in your way.
