What inspired you to get married?
My parents have been married for nearly 40 years and that means something to me. So, I always knew I would end up a married man one day. When you reach a certain point in life, hopefully you have what I like to call that “Ah Ha!” moment. The “Ah Ha!” moment, is the moment where you realize what’s important in this life and you really start to figure things out. I wanted a family of my own, a legacy that I could be proud of.
How did you know that your wife was the right person for you?
Timing is everything. I met my wife at a time in my life where I was ready to receive such a wonderful gift. Age doesn’t make you wise, your decision making does. I knew early on by the way she operated and how she made me feel that she was the one for me. I was fortunate enough to meet a woman who made me say to myself, “I don’t want to know what my life would be like without her in it.” So as the saying goes, when you know, you know.
What gave you the confidence to start hosting marriage workshops?
Marriage is such a wonderful thing and too often the picture is painted that marriage is so hard. My wife and I started hosting couples retreats to illustrate the positive, beautiful sides of marriage, because contrary to popular belief, marriage isn’t hard. It’s the two people in that marriage that make it hard. If both people in that relationship want the relationship to be spectacular, then guess what? It will be. If you go into something thinking it’s going to be hard, then guess what? It will be. I don’t claim to be an expert by any means, but I can share my experiences and give you a blueprint to greater relationship success.
What have you learned from the workshops that enhanced your marriage?
Helping people achieve greatness, allows me to stay focused on achieving greatness in my own life and marriage. One thing that my wife and I understand is that it’s not our job to make each other happy, because we control our own happiness. However, it is our job to add to the happiness that was already there.
What can people expect to take away from your workshops?
The way I structure a retreat is to create an environment that will uplift the couples that attend. We create a fun space for couples to enjoy one another and learn from each other. My workshops give couples the opportunity to remind themselves why the got together in the first place and how to stay in a healthy, happy flourishing relationship.
What are some tips to know that you have the right person as your mate?
The best piece of advice that I can give someone is just pay attention to the consistency of someone’s actions. A person’s actions will tell you all you need to know. Love is an action statement. If someone is really into you, they will not leave you questioning if they are or not. They will show you by the consistency of their actions.
I would also say listen to your gut. Too often people are driven by their emotions. A person can trick you by playing on your emotions and make you think they are good for you. However, that gut feeling will never steer you wrong. Get out of your head and your feelings and listen to what your gut is telling you.
Workshops are going well. What’s next for you?
I strongly believe that the healthier you feel about yourself, the healthier the relationship you have will be. Most of our relationship successes and failures for that matter, start with the person in the mirror. So, I will be releasing some Johnny “The Love Dr.” apparel soon, so that people can wear daily reminders of just how uniquely special they are. Because if you don’t love yourself first, how can you expect someone else to. I’ve also started fitness, health and wellness coaching. I am a firm believer that the greater your physical and mental health is, will also lead to greater more sustainable relationships as well.
