Tell us about your company?

DMV Healthy Insurance was established in 2014 to help Small Businesses, Individuals and Families navigate the various exchanges and marketplaces. I take pride in being able to help people find the best insurance that will address their health needs and also their budget. I work with stakeholders on all levels to improve the population health of the community. We help senior citizens find Medicare Advantage plans that offer services that are not included with original Medicare. We take the time to go over your medications and the ways you can access and utilize healthcare services. My goal with each client is to educate them on the benefits of health insurance and provide excellent customer service.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

I have worked in a variety of healthcare settings and wanted to have a direct impact on improving the health of people who have been underserved. I determined that I would be able to have the greatest impact by working independently with the different carriers to offer clients multiple options for enrolling in insurance. Brokers who are captive with a company can only sell one product which limits choices.

How have you managed through the pandemic?

We have persevered through the pandemic. In the beginning it was difficult because of the people who were being laid off or terminated. As a broker I am paid a commission for every person enrolled in a group or individual plan. As workplace staff decreased so did my commissions. Fortunately, the government through the American rescue plan allowed eligible individuals to sign up for health insurance using a special enrollment for Covid-19. It helped my business grow when others were shrinking or closing. The annual open enrollment period has been extended this year until January 15,2022. This new development will present opportunities to enroll people who may not qualify for Medicaid and are eligible to receive an advanced premium tax credit to help pay for their insurance.

What advice do you have for the poor community that needs insurance?

In order receive help you must first apply to see what you may be eligible for, it can be done online or in-person. The pandemic has shined a light on the disparity of treatment received by specific populations. If you are currently enrolled in a plan contact the member services number on the back of your member card to get a summary of your benefits. This document will explain important features of your plan like Deductible, Co-insurance and Copays, Drug Step therapy rules. My best advice is to take charge of your health by taking advantage of the preventive care which is free of charge on all plans. It will allow you to be screened for chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer and other chronic diseases that can be detected early reducing the cost of treatment and improving the outcomes.

What advice would you give someone who seeks to become an entrepreneur?

Becoming an entrepreneur is liberating, However it requires a big investment of your time and also money. It helps if you have a good sense of self awareness, because you must be adept at delegation and recognizing when professional assistance is needed. Owning a business creates additional obligations that are completely different from being an hourly employee. It ultimately will provide a legacy for your family which can continue after you pass away.

What do you see for your company in the next five years?

I am looking to expand my business into all the states where I am licensed. I want to bring on additional brokers to provide an opportunity for young men and women who want to change their community in a positive way. I would like to acquire additional business through the churches that I work with setting up health resource tables and doing seminars to educate the members on ways to stay healthy through proper diet and exercise at any age.
