Feminine, flirty, whimsical and versatile are just a few words to describe New York fashion

designer, Melissia Hill’s line, Ooshie.

Her collections are born of a potent blend of vibrant prints and luxurious fabrics. Her ready-to-wear dress collection adds a touch of flair and fantasy to everyday life. She created Ooshie with intention to represent a woman whose lifestyle personifies intelligence, individuality, elegance and grace. I sat down with the designer in her cozy New York studio to talk about Ooshie and the inspiration informing her creation.

Tell me how you got into the fashion design industry?

To be honest, unknowingly, my love for fashion design started in high school. I was always known for dressing my girlfriends before we had ever heard of the term, “stylist”. I can remember all the shirts and dresses that I cut up and altered to fit my unique style. My senior year, I designed my own prom dress and had it custom made. It was orange, off the shoulder, fitted, with long tails. I think I wore orange lipstick to match. I loved it.

What do you feel makes your
designs unique?

It’s the balance of sensual and smart. We have classic, easy to wear silhouettes and exotic prints. I’ve travelled all over the world looking for the perfect prints that inspire fantasy, happiness, and uniqueness. They must have that spark that makes you feel alive. I really get into the experience of choosing fabrics. I use music to inspire me while I look. I listen to music ranging from Brazilian music to Betty Davis. I twirl around and dance in the fabric to find the ones that excite me! The feeling that I have, while dancing, when I find the perfect fabric is a celebration of femininity and magic. I truly believe that women are magical.

What inspires you in your designs?

Possibility and femininity! The idea that greatness can happen at any time in our lives really moves me. Anything from meeting the perfect man to landing the job of your dreams can happen at a moment’s notice. I am inspired by the enormity of the idea that anything is possible. As for femininity, I’m inspired by the scenario of when a woman walks into a place and her energy lights up the room. Those in the room sense that hint of the unknown and there is a palpable exchange of hope and desire. I want to be a part of that experience. So I design my line envisioning this kind of exchange.

You’re a big advocate of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and clean diet. How does that tie into your career and life?

Well, having a very active and adventurous three year old makes eating healthy a must in order to have enough energy to keep up with him. Honestly, healthy eating and maintaining a positive lifestyle has been a personal journey of mine even before I had my son. I would not be the woman I am today without my green juices, exercising and eating lots of green vegetables and seafood. Recently, my sister and I started doing daily yoga and twice a day transcendental meditation because at this stage in my life I need clarity, empowering thoughts and positive inspiration. The women that I design for, like myself, desire a more fulfilling life. To me, clean eating leads to positive thinking which in turn makes it easy to make the right decisions in life.
