Tresses: Embrace your Curl

Embrace Your Curl…and your lifestyle. Don’t we all want that perfect mane of hair — the hair that does exactly what you want it to do all the time, hair that never gets frizzy or dry and doesn’t take 30 minutes in the morning to style and another 45 at night to maintain? In thinking about this, I’m quickly reminded of something my mother used to say when I made requests like this growing up, “You’re old enough for your wants not to hurt you.”

No one’s hair does exactly what they want it to do all of the time. Determining a style and length of hair that fits your way of life will greatly influence ease of maintenance and help you learn and embrace your personal curl pattern and texture. A mane of waist-length coils is beautiful, but a few inches of healthy, expertly shaped kinks are just as fabulous and may be simpler to take care of.

I’m ALL about a quick, easy regimen. Our SheaMoisture Raw Shea Moisture Retention Shampoo and Extra Moisture Detangler ($9.99 each; available at Target, Walgreens and CVS) are all I need to keep my pixie cut in check on these humid summer days. Do I still have to fight a battle with frizz on occasion? Yes, but I love my modest, four inches of sometimes frizzy curls anyway.

Have the Courage to be Yourself. Don’t allow someone else’s standard of beauty to stifle your growth as you determine how you live your life, and I’m not just talking hair here. SheaMoisture has been manufacturing beauty products for over 20 years. I’ve been with the company for the last 12 years and over this time period, I’ve borne witness to hundreds of different ideals of what’s fashionable or attractive, each unique and ever-changing, depending on trend and access to information.  I personally think true beauty is born of the appreciation of diversity and individual self-acceptance. Everyone will have their opinions about natural hair, but at the end of the day, what another person thinks of your hair, or your skin tone, or your sense of fashion isn’t important. What you think of yourself shines through, no matter what you’re wearing or how your hair is styled.

Seek Professional Help
I thank the heavens everyday for the professional advice, watchful eye and divine hands of celebrity stylist Ms. Diane Bailey — our SheaMoisture Brand Ambassador.  Understanding your curl pattern, can be frustrating. While hair typing helps us understand the basic aspects of curls, coils and kinks, it’s just the beginning of the story. I have three types of curl patterns on my head that range from very kinky to very wavy. To “diagnose” your hair and its needs fully, look to a professional. Similarly, this is the new age of DIY, but there are some things that you should leave to a pro.  Shampoos, conditioning, daily maintenance? You can do it! Cuts, highlights, herbal steams? Ask a pro! Take it from me; I’ve been using our SheaMoisture products for the last 12 years and I STILL learn a thing or two about styling and our hair care products each time Diane does my hair.

Don’t give up. The beauty in going natural is that each time you discover or try something new, it boosts your self-esteem and gives you the confidence to continue your journey to being your truest self.  I’ve been natural all of my life, but I’m still learning about my hair and more importantly about myself.
