100 Black Men of Prince George’s County

On this day our nation pauses to remember the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When considering the mission of the 100, “to improve the quality of life within our communities and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all African Americans”, Dr. King’s life and work can serve as an example to us all. As we all work to impact and enhance the lives of young people, we would do well to remember the words of Dr. King, “All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be.” Our efforts to improve the lives of others also helps us reach our great potential. We cannot be who we are destined to be unless we help others become who they are destined to become. Let’s all strive to make our network of mutuality stronger and better by improving the quality of life in our communities.

The origins of 100 Black Men is found in the dedication of a few distinguished men, who came together in New York in 1963 to empower African American and minority communities, invest in youth development, and dispel negative images of African American men.

Among these founders of the modern day 100 Black Men movement were the Honorable David Dinkins (former Mayor of New York), Andrew Hatcher (Associate Press Secretary to President John F. Kennedy), The Honorable Livingston Wingate (New York State Supreme Court Justice), and William Hayling, M.D. (Founding President).

The Prince George’s County chapter of 100 Black Men was founded in 2012. We provided community empowerment programs based on our four guiding Mentoring pillars of Education, Health and Wellness, Economic Empowerment, and Leadership.
