Tell us about your education.
I attended Booker T. Washington High School for Engineering Professions because I was a lover of Math. I then decided to stay home and attended the University of Houston majoring in Electrical Engineering. It wasn’t until my Economics professor put me out of class for talking so much and requested that I take a public speaking class in the Communications School, this was my junior year. I fell in love and switched my major to Broadcast Journalism and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication-Journalism.
What is the name of your company and share its mission?
The name of my company is Boom Media and Image Consulting LLC. Our mission is to “Promote and Develop the image of businesses and individuals and to empower a community of female leaders.”
What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
I was inspired to be an entrepreneur by watching my dad growing up. He always had multiple jobs, working hard to provide for our family. I was motivated to want to create something that will one day be a family legacy.
What has been the most challenging aspect of working for yourself?
The most challenging aspect of working for myself has been finding personal time. Self-care time, vacations, lunch with friends is an absolute treat when it happens. When you are the boss you can’t call in sick to anyone. You are responsible for others livelihood and making sure your clients are successful.
How do you find balance with your rigorous schedule and a personal life?
After 10 years in business I’m still learning how to balance a personal life. The biggest thing I have learned is surrounding myself around people who understand my life and don’t make me feel guilty. My parents have been a big part of helping me with this.
Who are some of your clients?
Our clients range from individuals, brands to corporations. Some of our clients are Actor Jason Dirden, NFL Player Whitney Mercilus, Legendary ballerina Lauren Anderson, Chick-fil-A and Red Bull.
While entrepreneurship is difficult, what keeps you motivated?
Yes entrepreneurship is difficult at times, but it is beyond rewarding. When I am able to see the success of others through telling their story and understand I was a part of that, it pushes me just a little bit more when I thought I had nothing left.
What advice would you give someone who seeks entrepreneurship?
I would advise anyone seeking entrepreneurship to be ready to work long hours, holidays and miss some key milestones.
What does success look like to you?
Wow, this is a good question and a loaded one. Success is something I discover everyday. I am my competition and once I achieve something I am ready to go after the next thing. Success is daily for me, I am learning everyday.
Where do you see your business in five years?
I am currently working on a brand new division of Boom that will allow me to create more jobs and opportunities for women. It is scheduled to launch January 2020!
