6 Misconceptions About Meditation: You May Believe

BY Vivinne Williams

I created Soulful Mindfulness & Healing Touch for Black women and women of color because I’ve experienced firsthand how powerfully healing meditation can be. In this time of intense, world, political and economic stress, black women are under tremendous pressure.

Yet many women hesitate to begin, held back by misconceptions that simply aren’t true. Let’s set the record straight.

Vivinne Williams, mindfulness coach.

Myth #1: Im Too Stressed to Meditate
Stress is exactly why you need meditation. Research shows it can reduce stress in the body.  Many conditions linked to stress, from high blood pressure to auto-immune illness are higher in black folks. Even a few minutes a day can bring calm and balance.

Myth #2: I Dont Have a Good Memory
Mindfulness sharpens focus and mental clarity. Many folks notice they think more clearly and feel refreshed with regular practice.

Myth #3: I Cant Focus Long Enough
Our attention spans are shrinking in the digital age, but meditation retrains your brain to concentrate, create, and stay present.

Myth #4: I Dont Have the Willpower to Sit Still
You don’t need to sit for an hour. Ten minutes is enough to begin, and over time, meditation builds discipline, resilience, and inner strength.

Myth #5: Im Too Tired to Meditate
Meditation helps you sleep more deeply, improving energy, balance, and overall well-being.

Myth #6: It Conflicts With My Religion

In the same way that therapy was once taboo in the black community- meditation is till fighting a stigma.  My response to this concern is- mindfulness meditation is secular, non-religious training to train the mind in awareness and peace.

The truth? Meditation isn’t about perfection—it’s a practice that helps us thrive. While it may not be right for everyone with certain mental health conditions, for most people it’s safe, effective, and transformative.

If you’re a Black woman or woman of color seeking a safe, nurturing space to release stress and reconnect with yourself, my Soulful Mindfulness & Healing Touch program is now enrolling.

This small, focused online group program blends mindfulness meditation with self-acupressure and other healing practices from my 25+ years of teaching. You’ll be supported, heard, and empowered.
