What inspired you to pursue a career in fitness and wellness, and how did you establish yourself as one of the most sought-after trainers in the industry?
Deciding to pursue a career in fitness came quite easily since I have been involved in sports for as long as I can remember. Growing up on the southside of Phoenix, Pop Warner Football at the age of 5 or 6 was almost a prerequisite. That first year playing football and stepping out from under my mother’s watch ignited my drive and revealed my natural ability to play the game. This ultimately led me to track & field and eventually weightlifting.
I would have to credit my personality—some may call it charm—as what really set me apart from other trainers or fitness enthusiasts. I recognized the response I received and rode that wave all the way to success.
Your clientele is primarily African American. How has this influenced your approach to fitness and the way you connect with your clients?
I’m from Phoenix, AZ—primarily the southside—but I attended schools in the suburbs my entire life. Because of this, I like to think that I am relatable to many. I believe my clientele is mainly African American due to my core audience online, where most of my clients have found me. That’s not to say that I don’t see the value of being a popular face in an industry that lacks diversity on a major scale.
Professionalism and genuine care are key pillars of your work. How do you maintain such a high standard of service while managing a demanding schedule?
How I operate with my clients is a direct reflection of how I was raised and my desire to make a major impact in their lives. I don’t seek to provide quick fixes or promote current fitness fads. Instead, I aim to create lasting, positive habits by teaching and leading by example. Not every person is as experienced, and “gym-timidation” is a real thing. I want to ensure that whoever needs guidance is getting all they can from my knowledge. Without my clients, there would be no need for me, so prioritizing them comes naturally.
Your approach focuses on both mental and physical health. How do you address the mental well-being of your clients alongside their physical fitness goals?
In today’s world, you can’t turn on the television or log onto social media without seeing something about the severity of mental health issues. As a child, I grew up thicker than most of my classmates and believed I was overweight. I struggled internally with food and my self-image, not realizing I was experiencing body dysmorphia. I would skip lunches or drink SlimFast in second grade because I hated feeling like “the fat kid.” Looking back, I see a regular, healthy child, but at the time, I lacked the understanding and education.
Even today, I sometimes battle with my younger self when I am not happy with my body or find myself comparing it to others. If I, someone who seemingly has fitness figured out, can struggle with an unhealthy mindset, I know my clients could be experiencing similar issues. I don’t want them to suffer in silence. I want to provide a safe space for growth and let them know they are not alone. Taking the first step in working with me will hopefully help them realize their potential, and I care about their mental fitness just as much as their physical transformation.
Meal preparation is a significant part of your program. What advice do you give clients to ensure they stay consistent with their nutrition?
I teach my clients how to live a healthy life, not by using quick fixes or shortcuts. The work has to be ongoing if they truly want to make a lasting change. A meal plan is just one part of that new lifestyle, but it’s one of the most important because what we put in our bodies impacts more than just the number on the scale. Figuring out your true motivation will determine the level of discipline you commit to your journey.
How do you tailor your fitness plans to meet the individual goals of your clients while keeping them motivated?
Every client isn’t looking to compete or “look like me,” but the fact that they have chosen to work with me means they are looking for a change. I provide them with enough variation to their norm to help them reach their health goals. There are a few basic must-dos: cutting out excess sugars, being aware of caloric intake, and balancing high-protein vs. high-carb meals. Addressing these habits for the long term will greatly benefit their goals.
What challenges have you faced as an entrepreneur in the fitness industry?
The biggest challenge I have faced is the “level up.” I am my biggest critic and am always moving the goalpost. One of the hardest challenges was opening my first gym in Los Angeles at the height of the pandemic. While everything seemed to be falling into place, I quickly realized the struggles of operating a private gym in Hollywood during such uncertain times. After two years, it made more financial sense to close the doors and pivot rather than risk financial and mental burnout.
How have you overcome challenges to build a successful brand?
Since closing the Beck Effect Training Facility, I’ve recognized areas where I could have done better. However, I also appreciate that what I accomplished was no small feat. One setback does not define me, my dreams, or my future opportunities. You have to know when to pivot, learn from past experiences, and determine how you want to move forward.
What does success look like for you?
I have lived many different lives in my 33 years, and my definition of success has evolved. Now, I want to wake up happy and abundant in the life I am living and the work I am doing. I’ve been blessed to experience many of my dreams, and I now understand that true success comes from genuine happiness and fulfillment.
What keeps you motivated in such a competitive industry?
I stay motivated by focusing on my lane and excelling within it. I don’t feel the need to compete with others or rush to the finish line. My motivation comes from personal growth and exceeding my own expectations. As long as I maintain that energy, I know I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
What can people expect from you in 2025?
In 2025, I plan to pursue even more goals and dreams within fitness. I am currently an NPC Men’s Physique champion and plan to earn my pro card this year, building my name in that world. Additionally, I am a fire recruit for the Atlanta Fire Department and am working toward becoming a full-fledged firefighter/EMT to further my desire to serve others.
What legacy do you hope to leave in the fitness world, especially for the African American community?
As a Black man who is also part of the queer community, I believe it is crucial to represent something positive on multiple fronts. I want young Black and Brown boys to know that the world is bigger than their neighborhood or any predetermined path. Representation is vital, and I want to set a tone for the next generation, showing them they can be true to themselves while breaking barriers.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a fitness trainer or entrepreneur in this competitive industry?
Commit fully. Learn your craft both in the classroom and through life experience. Find your lane, be patient, and be disciplined in your growth. With confidence and knowledge, your passion can become your reality.
