LOS ANGELES, CA — On Saturday, May 20, 2023, BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective) remixed the stigma around mental health in Black communities with their 3rd annual Black Healing Remixed (BHR) Summit, which focused on the wellness of Black women and girls. The event was held at the E.K. Art Gallery. BHR switches shame to celebration, stigma to social justice, and creates a new chorus of connection rooted in humor, practical skills, and liberation.

Black Healing Remixed is an interactive community program that creates conversations and events that provide mental health education while centering Black folks’ unique healing practices and approaches. The event featured panel conversations with dynamic, Black women leaders in entertainment and mental health, and celebrity guests. With a hybrid format, including in-person and virtual activations, guests participated in wellness stations and arts and crafts to a live mural painting.

“As Black women, we carry a lot on our shoulders, while often neglecting our own mental health and wellness,” says Director of Training & Programs at BEAM, Natalie Patterson. “BEAM’s Black Women & Girls Wellness Day provides a safe space for healing, joy, and reclamation.”

Panelists for its Black Women & Girls Wellness Day, included Psychologist, Founder & CEO, Therapy for Black Girls, Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, Scholar-Activist, Freedom Writer, and Cultural Consultant, Dr. Yaba Blay, Actress and Humanitarian, Isis King, and Greenleaf and Selah and the Spades Actress, Lovie Simone.

“Black Healing Remixed is all about redefining the way we approach conversations around mental health in Black communities, and now more than ever, we need to cultivate healing practices and care systems that center our needs and experiences,” says Founder & Executive Director of BEAM, Yolo Akili Robinson. “This year, our focus is centering Black women, femmes, and girls and carving out a space where their worth and brilliance are both acknowledged and celebrated.”

Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective is an institution dedicated to the healing, wellness, and liberation of Black and marginalized communities. Their mission is to remove the barriers that Black people experience around accessibility to emotional health care, through education, training, advocacy, and the creative arts.
