Currently an executive at Fannie Mae, Brown manages a multimillion-dollar affordable housing portfolio that supports working families in marginalized communities, sits on the board of directors for the Marshall Heights Community Development Organization, and served as board vice president for EmpowerED—DC.

First elected to public office in 2020, Brown serves as chairman of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 7B which encompasses the Hillcrest, Penn Branch, Fort Davis, Fort DuPont, Randle Highlands, Fairfax Village, Greenway, and Twining communities. In February 2023, Brown was appointed to serve on the National League Cities’ REAL Council where he weighs-in on affordable housing policies affecting different communities across the country. In 2022, he was appointed to serve on the organization’s Community and Economic Development Committee.

“In talking to my neighbors, many agree that we are experiencing unprecedented times in the District, said Brown. “Ward 7 unemployment is 13 points above the national average, crime is devastating our quality of life, and the promise of affordable housing is still out-of-reach for many of our working families. Residents are looking to our city leaders for reassurance that things will be ok, but we are at the point where words are not enough.”

Brown is no stranger to speaking up for his community. During the height of the pandemic, he successfully advocated for Ward 7’s first vaccine and testing site at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, called for resource officers to remain in DC public schools, and hosted rent and utility clinics that helped save housing for over 100 families.

“I’m running because Ward 7 deserves a Councilmember who will put in the work to keep our communities first,” he continued.

Brown has also organized community budget forums to “identify, discuss and prioritize” spending on public projects, which resulted in a collection of community ideas and recommendations that were sent to the mayor and city council.

When asked about his leadership style, Brown had this to say: “I will value the opinions of all our neighbors and make sure our community is always part of the decision-making process so that we can lead together.”

Brown and his seven brothers were raised by a single mother in a two-bedroom home. “I learned early on that education was my pathway up and out of poverty and became the first person in my family to graduate from college,” said Brown.

He attended Alabama State University, Rutgers University, and the University of California—Berkley earning a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Law, a master’s degree in business administration and several Professional Certificates. He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc and the University Club of Washington, DC.

Prior to his success in community development, Brown was an award-winning high school math teacher and spent almost a decade in the United States Army where he was deployed on three tours of duty. For his service and dedication, Brown has received over 10 medals and ribbons including the National Defense Service Medal.
