What inspired you to create Portraits of Brilliance, and what story do you hope to tell through this collection?
This project seeks to illuminate the idea that brilliance is not exclusive to a select few individuals. As you explore the collection, you will find tributes to the accomplishments of ordinary people who possess the determination to pursue and attain goals that may have seemed beyond their reach. Through each portrait, I aim to highlight the power of perseverance, creativity, and self-discovery, illustrating that the potential for greatness resides within all of us.
Your work captures a deep sense of emotion and identity. How do you approach translating those elements into your portraits?
I strive to envision viewpoints beyond my own, posing questions and integrating the responses into the composition. I immerse myself in the subject’s story, absorbing their struggles, triumphs, and essence. By layering colors, textures, and expressive brushstrokes, I aim to create an emotional resonance that allows viewers to connect with the spirit and narrative of each portrait.
Can you share the creative process behind this exhibition? From concept to execution, what were some defining moments?
This exhibition serves as an introduction to the “Elevation Concept,” which aims to delve into the theme of elevating the mind and the experience of doing so.
Titled Portraits of Brilliance, it reflects on the extraordinary nature of humanity. I believe that brilliance is not exclusive; everyone has the potential to elevate their thought processes. This collection pays homage to individuals who have achieved such heights. The artwork mostly consists of facial collages of everyday people, crafted to symbolize the idea that we all possess the ability to explore the depths of our minds. A defining moment in the creative process was when I recognized that these portraits needed to be more than just visual representations—they had to tell a story of intellectual and personal elevation.
Your use of color and texture is striking. How do you decide on the palette and techniques for each portrait?
The amazing thing about color is its ability to evoke emotions. Warm and cool colors, along with their various combinations, can be used to harmonize the emotional tone of the artwork. These elements contribute significantly to the narrative. I carefully select my palette based on the essence of each subject—whether they exude warmth, wisdom, resilience, or introspection. The techniques I employ, such as layering, impasto, and mixed media, are designed to enhance the subject while utilizing color as a means to achieve balance and further develop the story.
This collection is titled Portraits of Brilliance. What does brilliance mean to you, and how is it reflected in your subjects?
In simple terms, brilliance refers to an exceptionally bright or intense light. However, it is also a term used to characterize individuals who demonstrate advanced cognitive abilities. I employ the term brilliance to capture a specific moment in an individual’s thought process and the evolution of an idea. These portraits serve as an imaginative snapshot of a person engaged in a heightened state of intellectual activity—when inspiration strikes, when an idea is born, when clarity is achieved.
Are there particular individuals featured in this collection whose stories deeply moved you? How did you choose the subjects for this series?
The collection includes images of specific individuals like James Baldwin. It also features paintings dedicated to individuals and groups who exemplify elevated thinking in their pursuit of life goals. I selected these subjects to emphasize the concept of elevation, which has been integral to my artistic practice for over three decades. Recently, I have reflected on numerous individuals who have not received due recognition for their contributions to American history, including figures like Bessie Coleman, the “Golden 13,” and many others. Their stories of resilience, innovation, and unshakable determination deeply resonate with the core message of this collection.
How has your artistic journey evolved over the years, and how does this exhibition reflect that growth?
Over the years, I have honed my technical abilities and deepened my understanding of storytelling through visual art. My thought process and how I convey ideas in my artwork have improved, allowing me to create pieces that are even more layered and thought-provoking. This exhibition demonstrates my growth by showcasing my ability to merge technique with narrative, using various artistic methods to build a collection that is both powerful and enduring.
Art has the power to influence and inspire. What message do you want audiences to take away from Portraits of Brilliance?
I hope the audience leaves with the realization that brilliance is an inherent trait within each of us. It often requires a level of effort that we may hesitate to exert. Therefore, it is essential to push the boundaries of our thinking. This collection is an invitation for viewers to recognize their own potential and embrace their unique journey of intellectual and personal elevation.
Many of your works celebrate culture and history. How does this collection contribute to the broader conversation about representation in art?
I am convinced that there are gaps in American history that remain unaddressed, yet a wealth of information has been obscured. Now is the moment to illuminate those gaps and reveal the genuine brilliance of the individuals who constitute American history. Through this collection, I aim to challenge conventional narratives and create a space where underrepresented stories are honored and celebrated.
Looking back at your career, what have been some pivotal moments that shaped you as an artist?
A significant turning point in my artistic journey occurred when my good friend and fellow artist, Vincent Christie, invited me to a private drawing session at Spelman College. This event, organized by Chanel Holloway, was exclusively for professional artists. During this session, I had the chance to connect with some of the most talented artists I had ever encountered, all gathered in one space, and I learned so much from them. That experience reaffirmed my commitment to my craft and the importance of continuous learning and collaboration.
With this exhibition, what do you hope to contribute to the world of contemporary portraiture?
This exhibition represents a unified collection of works that transcends traditional notions of portraiture, emphasizing not only physical beauty but also illuminating the emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions inherent in a portrait. It highlights the beauty of the brilliant mind. Portraits of Brilliance is also grounded in contemporary principles and employs experimental techniques, pushing the boundaries of how we perceive and engage with portraiture.
Are there any future projects or artistic directions you’re excited about exploring next?
In my perspective, the future is already unfolding. At present, I have an exhibition at the Loft in Marietta Square, featuring pieces from a traveling exhibit titled The Roads We Travel, which employs the idea of “Contained Abstraction.” My goal is to expand the limits of contemporary art through my creative pursuits. I am particularly excited about exploring more abstract expressions of brilliance, using unconventional materials and formats to further push the narrative of intellectual and personal elevation.
