Before E. Lynn Harris became one of America’s most beloved bestselling authors, he was selling copies of his self-published debut novel, Invisible Life, out of the trunk of his car and through Black beauty salons and bookstores. What began as a grassroots literary phenomenon grew into a remarkable career that transformed contemporary Black literature.
Published in 1991, Invisible Life introduced readers to Raymond Tyler Jr., a young Black man navigating love, identity, sexuality, and the expectations of family and society. At a time when stories about Black gay men were rarely given space in mainstream publishing, Harris wrote with honesty and compassion about lives too often left unseen.
His novels found an extraordinary readership, particularly among Black women, while opening conversations about sexuality, secrecy, friendship, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Now, his groundbreaking debut novel is coming to the stage.
Behind the Mask: Invisible Life – The Musical, created by Proteus X and Javon Johnson, features original music by the legendary Ashford & Simpson. The production will be presented at the historic Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C., on November 30 and December 1, 2026, culminating on World AIDS Day.
Bringing this story to the stage is more than a theatrical undertaking. It is an opportunity to honor Harris’s literary legacy, introduce his work to new generations, and continue the conversations he helped make possible.
