In this exclusive interview, Jackson shares the inspiration behind his book, the creative process that brought it to life, and the valuable messages he hopes will resonate with children for years to come.

What inspired you to write this children’s book, and what message do you hope young readers take away from it?

One of my greatest inspirations was the special bond that is created when parents and children share stories together. Those moments often become cherished memories that last a lifetime. I was also curious about how my experience writing television and film scripts would translate into creating a children’s storybook. Storytelling has always been a creative outlet for me, and I take great pride in using it to help strengthen family connections. Through this book, I wanted to inspire important core values while encouraging children to embrace wonder, adventure, and the joy of discovering the world around them. My hope is that young readers walk away feeling inspired to explore, dream, and appreciate the beauty that exists in their everyday surroundings.

Can you tell us about the journey from your initial idea to seeing the finished book in print?

The journey from concept to publication has been both exciting and rewarding. From the earliest stages, I enjoyed developing an engaging theme and storyline that would capture the imagination of young readers. Creating a diverse cast of characters with unique personalities and relatable traits was one of my favorite parts of the process. I carefully crafted each character’s strengths, challenges, and personal growth, ensuring that their individual journeys complemented one another.

As the story evolved, I focused on weaving meaningful lessons into an adventurous and entertaining narrative that both children and parents could connect with. Once the story was complete, watching the illustrations bring the characters and scenes to life was truly magical. The vibrant colors, expressive emotions, and captivating settings elevated the story in ways I had only imagined, transforming words on a page into a vivid world that readers can experience and enjoy.

How did you develop the characters in the story, and are any of them inspired by real people or experiences?

Each character was intentionally developed with relatable personality traits, strengths, and challenges that readers can connect with. Many of them were inspired by people I’ve encountered throughout my life, as well as experiences that have shaped my personal growth. Some situations in the story were influenced by moments when I gained valuable insight or appreciation after navigating a challenge. Others were inspired by lessons I wish I had learned earlier in life.

By incorporating these experiences into the story, I wanted to provide young readers with perspectives and tools that may help them navigate similar situations. In many ways, the book reflects the idea of “if I knew then what I know now,” allowing children to benefit from wisdom that often comes through experience.

Children’s literature has the power to shape young minds. What values or life lessons were most important for you to include in this book?

Self-confidence, encouragement, and appreciation for the world around us were among the most important themes I wanted to explore. I wanted young readers to understand the importance of believing in themselves while also supporting and uplifting others. Equally important was my desire to reignite a sense of wonder about the outdoors.

In today’s world, children are often surrounded by screens and technology, so I wanted to encourage them to reconnect with nature. There is something special about feeling a cool breeze on a warm day, hearing birds sing, smelling fresh air, and experiencing the beauty of the natural world firsthand. My hope is that this story inspires children to explore, appreciate nature, and develop a deeper connection to the world around them.

What challenges did you encounter while writing for a young audience, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was learning how to communicate meaningful ideas in a way that was simple, engaging, and age-appropriate. Writing for children is very different from writing television and film scripts. I had to find the right balance between entertainment and education while maintaining a story that would capture and hold a child’s attention.

At the same time, I wanted to include both subtle and direct lessons about character development, perseverance, and personal growth. Achieving that balance required careful thought, but it ultimately helped me create a story that is both enjoyable and meaningful for young readers.

How do you hope parents, educators, and caregivers will use your book as a tool for learning and conversation?

I hope this story becomes a meaningful tool for connection and conversation between children and the adults who care for them. Through the characters’ adventures, readers can explore themes such as courage, creative problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience.

I would also love for the book to spark discussions about supporting one another through challenges and recognizing the importance of self-belief. The characters learn to trust themselves and their abilities, and I believe those lessons can inspire valuable conversations that benefit both children and adults.

Representation is an important part of children’s literature. How does your book help children see themselves, their communities, or the world around them?

Each character brings a unique perspective, personality, and set of strengths to the story. I intentionally created characters with relatable qualities so that readers can identify with them on both an individual and collective level. Their differences contribute to the success of the group, demonstrating the value of diverse perspectives and personalities.

I believe children will see pieces of themselves reflected in the characters while also gaining a greater appreciation for the unique qualities others bring to a community. Through those connections, readers can develop a stronger sense of belonging, empathy, and understanding.

As an author, what advice would you give to aspiring writers who dream of creating stories that inspire the next generation?

My most important piece of advice is simple: start. Never underestimate the power of taking the first step. Every accomplishment begins with action, no matter how small that action may seem. Write your ideas down. Record your thoughts in a voice memo. Capture those moments of inspiration wherever and whenever they happen.

Many of my story ideas begin as notes on my phone. The key is to give your ideas a place to grow. Equally important, avoid comparing your journey to someone else’s. Progress looks different for everyone, and measuring your success against others can become discouraging. Instead, focus on consistency, dedication, and your own unique path.

Remember that progress is not always measured by giant leaps. Small, consistent efforts compound over time and often lead to extraordinary results. Most importantly, have the courage to begin even when you’re uncertain. Perfection is not required. Growth comes through the process. It is impossible to finish what you never start, so take that first step and trust yourself enough to keep moving forward. This version elevates Gilbert Jackson’s voice while maintaining the authenticity of his original responses and creating a polished magazine-style feature.
