This Author Is Giving ‘Shh’ A New Meaning

By Staff

In October 2021, the apparel brand GrindMatch closed its doors after over a decade of success, which was largely attributed to the virality of its trademarked slogan, “Shut Up Keep Grinding®.” Many believed the phrase along with imagery of customers with index fingers raised to their mouths would vanish. But owner, Jada Davis, had more in mind on the heels of the 2022 release of her first book, “Don’t Let Your Mouth Get You In Trouble: How To Get Out Of Your Own Way And Execute.

The cover of Davis’ book showcases her giving the popular “shh” gesture. Pre-sales for the book opened on January 18. Davis is a multi-faceted serial entrepreneur, human resources professional, travel enthusiast, and former nationally syndicated radio producer. Following is an exclusive Heart & Soul interview with Davis in which she shares why her book is a gift to those looking to silence distractions, get out of their head, and create streamlined processes to reach their goals.

Q: Can you give our readers a bit of your professional background?

A: I’m no stranger to hard work. Among my colleagues and friends, I’ve earned the nickname “Jada-of-All Trades.” This nickname comes from me being a multifaceted serial entrepreneur, human resources professional, travel enthusiast, and former nationally syndicated radio producer. I enjoy connecting dots while elevating others. Doing this has allowed me to become an expert in helping professionals land dream jobs and monetize their talents. I’m a proud native of Memphis, Tennessee but now I reside in Washington, D.C. I earned my B.A. in Communications at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and MBA at The University of Texas – Arlington. In 2020, I published my first workbook, “Get Your Shift In Order,” which guides readers on how to prepare their personal affairs. I’m just all about living for a living and doing what makes you happy.

Q: What or who inspired you to become an author?

A: As with many things in my life, my entrepreneurial parents inspired me to become an author. They have always modeled serial entrepreneurship for me and the title was a common response from my mother, because I had a lot to say growing up. Writing is a creative outlet that I enjoy, and I’m always looking at ways to monetize my passions. My most recent career exploration of human resources has shown me just how valuable professional coaching can be to a person; as well as how much people don’t know. Making the leap really came from watching my former company’s inspirational motto, “Shut Up Keep Grinding®,” go viral on social media. I had it trademarked and knew at that very moment I wanted to write a book that connected to the phrase. I used the “shh” gesture along with that motto, and now with my book that gesture will hopefully become a universal symbol for get sh*t done!

Q: What is your book, “Don’t Let Your Mouth Get You In Trouble,” about?

A: It’s a self-help book for existing and aspiring business owners. You will be empowered into action! I focus on business owners who feel stuck, discouraged, or unsure how to make it to the finish line. I also focus on 9-to-5ers who want to explore entrepreneurship but are afraid of what others may think. I provide practical examples, calls-to-action, resources, and tools to help you overcome self-doubt and excuse-making. You can find the book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and my website www.jadadavis.com.

Q: What do you hope readers take from your new book?

A: I hope you are inspired to confidently handle life’s challenges while not becoming the source of the roadblock. My book includes tools for managing a brand, important business boundaries, what support really looks like, and key best practices for servicing a target audience. I did my best to equip you with relatable stories, industry recommendations, and a practical action plan. I believe these things will take you from ideation to execution!

Q: We reach a lot of women, is there any specific message you have for women considering your book?

A: I work with a lot of women. Many of us have great ideas but are not sure what to do with them. In my book, I share tips on boundaries and prioritizing. These two things usually keep women stuck. We like to be everything for everyone, which causes us to miss out on doing things we are passionate about. I want women to know that you can do it “ugly,” meaning it doesn’t have to be perfect. Just start!

Q: What is next for you?

A: I’m monitoring COVID-19 reports and restrictions in order to plan for the best time to start my book tour across the country. In the meantime, I have added some supporting items to the book to help me connect with readers! First, there is the VIP Book Box, which includes a digital book preview, paperback  copy of the book, and 3+ merch items from small businesses and Black women. Next, there is the Bet On Yourself Bundle, which includes a signed copy of the paperback book, strategy session, accountability call, and network of preferred vendors and professional referrers. These add-ons are available on my retail website www.jadadavis.shop.
