Deven Trowers, founder of DT Communications, is a dynamic force reshaping the world of multicultural marketing through authenticity, empathy, and storytelling. A powerhouse professional and devoted mother of three, Deven seamlessly blends the worlds of business and motherhood with intention and purpose. Her personal title, “Chief Mom Officer,” isn’t just clever branding—it’s a reflection of how she leads, nurtures, and inspires in every facet of her life. In this candid conversation, Deven shares the heart behind her brand, the values she instills in her children, and how being a mom gives her a unique edge in business.
What inspired you to create DT Communications, and how did your journey as a mother influence that vision?
I created DT Communications because I saw a gap in how brands were communicating with underrepresented audiences. I wanted to build a multicultural marketing agency that leads with authenticity, strategy, and storytelling and that puts heart into every campaign. Becoming a mother gave me a deeper sense of purpose. I didn’t just want to build a business, I wanted to build a legacy. My three children inspire me every day to create something they can be proud of and potentially inherit one day. They remind me that I’m not just building for now, I’m building for generations.
How do you define the term “Chief Mom Officer,” and what does it mean to you personally and professionally?
“Chief Mom Officer” is my personal title, it’s a blend of “mom,” “CEO,” and “nurture.” It reflects how I lead with empathy, balance priorities with intention, and nurture not just my children, but also my clients, my team, and the stories we tell. It means I show up every day with love, grit, and a little glitter. Professionally, it means I give myself permission to be both boss and mom, and I honor that duality unapologetically. Because at the end of the day, no matter how big the campaign or client, my first and forever priority will always be my children.
What does a typical day in your life look like as both a CEO and a mom on a mission?
It starts early usually with packing lunches, morning affirmations, and a little bit of beautiful chaos. After school drop-offs, I shift into CEO mode: client calls, strategy sessions, team check-ins, and creative work. Evenings are for family, homework help, dance practices, and dinner around the table. Once the kids are in bed, I sometimes circle back to emails or work on passion projects. And let’s be real—there are plenty of calls taken in the car during school pick-ups and extracurricular drop-offs. Thank God for headphones and strong coffee. Every day looks a little different, but I keep it all moving with grace, grit, and my calendar.
What advice would you give to other women who are trying to build a brand while raising a family?
Start before you feel ready. Give yourself permission to evolve. Build a support system, not just a business. And remember: the same love and patience you give to your family, give to yourself and your dreams. You don’t have to choose between being a good mom and a good entrepreneur. You can be both, beautifully.
How do you stay grounded and motivated when things feel overwhelming, both at home and in business?
I breathe. I pause. I pray. I remind myself why I started. I lean on my tribe, my mentors, my girlfriends, and my family. I also give myself permission to rest when I need to, without guilt. Motivation isn’t always constant, but purpose is—and that’s what keeps me going. I’m not much of a TV person, but podcasts and sermons are my lifeline. They pour into me, refill my spirit, and help me stay focused when things feel overwhelming, both at home and in business.
What values do you try to instill in your children through your work and entrepreneurial journey?
Integrity. Courage. Creativity. And the belief that they can create a life they truly love. I want my children to know that their voice matters and that they can lead with both strength and kindness. Through my work, I hope they see that success isn’t just about what you do, but how you do it and who you uplift along the way. Most importantly, I want them to know to include God in everything they do. With Him, there’s no limit to what they can achieve.
How do you approach storytelling and brand messaging differently because of your dual role as a mother and a communications professional?
I think about the emotional heartbeat of every story. Being a mom has deepened my emotional intelligence—I see beyond the metrics to the message. I know how to connect with people where they are, because I live that reality every day. Whether I’m writing a communications strategy or planning a campaign, I always ask, “How will this make someone feel?”
What challenges have you faced balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and how have those experiences shaped your leadership style?
Balancing it all has definitely had its moments. From late-night deadlines with a baby monitor by my side, to taking Zoom calls with a toddler on my lap, I’ve learned the art of grace. These experiences made me a more compassionate leader. I value flexibility, boundaries, and prioritizing people over perfection. My leadership style is now rooted in humanity, and I encourage others to bring their whole selves to the work.
Can you share a moment when being a mom gave you a unique advantage in your business decisions or client relationships?
Absolutely. One of my clients was launching a family-oriented product, and my insights as a mom directly informed the campaign, from language that resonated with real parents to the platforms we used. My lived experience helped create a campaign that felt relatable, not transactional. Being a mom often gives me that “real life” lens that makes the work more grounded and emotionally intelligent.
What does success look like for you—not just in business, but in life overall?
Success, to me, is alignment. It’s waking up each day proud of the work I do, the people I love, and the woman I’m becoming. It’s impact and inner peace. It’s building a business that honors my gifts while creating meaningful memories with my three children. Success is living out loud, on purpose, with love. It’s writing my dreams down and watching them unfold, one step at a time.
