Joslyn RW Kelly is more than a restaurateur—she’s a force of resilience, vision, and love for her hometown of Gary, Indiana. As the founder and owner of J’s Breakfast Club, Joslyn has transformed personal tragedy and hardship into a thriving, soul-filled dining experience that nourishes both the body and the community. Her story is one of deep faith, unwavering commitment, and an unshakable belief in the power of purpose. Through her restaurant, Joslyn is redefining what it means to be a community leader—building not just a business, but a movement grounded in culture, care, and connection.

What inspired you to open J’s Breakfast Club?
J’s Breakfast Club was born out of a deeply personal and painful chapter in my life. After losing my son to suicide and being terminated from my job just six months later, I found myself at a crossroads. I knew that whatever I did next had to be meaningful—it had to matter. I took time to reflect on what brought me the most joy and fulfillment throughout my life, and the answer was clear: hospitality. Feeding people, serving others, and creating moments of connection around food—that’s where my heart truly lives. So, I decided to pursue it with intention, and the rest, as they say, is history.
For those who haven’t had the pleasure of visiting, how would you describe the vibe, menu, and mission of J’s Breakfast Club?
J’s Breakfast Club is a warm, soulful space where comfort food meets community. We offer casual American dining with a distinct soulful flair. But beyond the menu, our mission is simple yet powerful: to inspire positivity through love by doing what we love, where we love, for the people we love. We believe love begins at the kitchen table, and that’s exactly the feeling we strive to recreate—family, togetherness, and the kind of connection that reminds you of home.

What makes your restaurant more than just a place to eat?
J’s is a safe space. It’s a hub for community, encouragement, and affirmation. People don’t just come to us because they’re hungry for food—they’re hungry for connection, for peace, for a place where they feel seen and valued. We intentionally foster an environment where relationships can blossom and healing can begin. Our restaurant is built on love, and that love shows up in every interaction, every plate, and every smile.

How do you incorporate the culture and spirit of Gary into the business?
Gary is the spirit of J’s Breakfast Club. The city’s history, resilience, and hope are the very foundation of our story. Like Gary, we’ve experienced highs and lows, but there’s a strength and a faith that persists. Gary has a legacy of perseverance and pride, even in the face of disinvestment and challenges. That same spirit fuels me to keep showing up and to keep pouring into this community. We share a story of redemption, and I’m proud that J’s can be a bright spot in that narrative.
Many entrepreneurs might have chosen to set up shop elsewhere. What made you stay and invest in Gary?
That’s a question I ask myself sometimes, too! I joke that I’m “chained to Gary,” but the truth is deeper—I’m called to be here. Every time I think about leaving, something inside pushes me to stay. Gary has given me so much—opportunities to grow, learn, and expand my vision. I feel a responsibility to give back, to help create something lasting for others to build upon. This city is part of my DNA, and I choose to invest in its future.
How has the community responded to your restaurant?
When we first opened, my vision was simple: home-cooked food to-go. But the community had a different vision. People came in and simply refused to leave! They wanted to sit, stay, and share a meal with one another. Eventually, two regulars gifted us with a full set of china for 36 guests and told us to “figure it out.” That moment marked a turning point. Nearly a decade later, we’re still figuring it out—but now as a full-service restaurant with catering and event rental offerings. It’s been a journey shaped by the community’s love and determination.

Are there any moments or stories that stand out in terms of local impact?
Honestly, every day holds a story. Even on the quietest days, someone reminds us why we’re here—through a word of thanks, a heartfelt conversation, or a shared memory. The impact isn’t always loud, but it’s consistent. That daily affirmation from our customers, that gratitude for choosing to invest in Gary, is what keeps us going.
In what ways do you use your platform as a business owner to uplift others in the community—whether it’s through employment, mentorship, or advocacy?
Our platform is rooted in service. We host Silver Mondays, a program focused on enriching the lives of seniors through resources, information, and connection. On Saturdays, we spotlight small, local businesses, giving them a platform to showcase their products and stories—free of charge. We’ve also hosted countless community events, celebrations, and partnerships over the years. Everything we do is designed to build others up and create ripple effects of empowerment.
Running a business is never easy, and doing so in an underserved community can present unique obstacles. What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is internal—overcoming the limits I placed on myself. It’s a daily practice of shifting my mindset, believing that anything is possible, and allowing myself the freedom to dream and take action. Ideas are my currency, and they keep me energized, moving forward, and open to growth. Learning to trust myself—and God—in the process has been transformative.

How do you keep yourself and your team motivated during the tougher times?
I remind myself and my team that this too shall pass. Tough times are inevitable, but they’re temporary. We use every moment—good or bad—as a learning opportunity. I lead with a solutions-oriented mindset, and that attitude has helped cultivate a loyal and resilient team. Many of them have stayed with us for years, and that’s a testament to the culture we’ve created together.
What legacy do you hope J’s Breakfast Club leaves behind—not just as a restaurant, but as a cultural and community cornerstone?
J’s is not just a restaurant—it’s a movement. It’s a symbol of what’s possible when faith meets action. I want it to be remembered as a place that inspired belief, fostered community, and demonstrated that love is powerful enough to rebuild a city. I hope it stands as proof that purpose-driven work can transform lives, one meal at a time.
What advice would you give to other Black women entrepreneurs looking to start something meaningful in their own hometowns?
Don’t overthink it. Let yourself dream freely, move in faith, and trust the process. Give yourself grace along the way, but above all—just do it. Your purpose will carry you further than you can imagine.

When you think about your journey—from growing up in Gary to becoming a beacon of entrepreneurship—what are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of maintaining my voice, my integrity, and my faith. Through all the trials and triumphs, I’ve stayed true to who I am. That’s my greatest accomplishment.
What do self-care and soul nourishment look like for you personally as a business owner and community leader?
I make it a point to travel at least once every quarter. Those experiences open my mind to new possibilities, refresh my spirit, and help me envision the next level—not just for myself, but for my business and my city. Exploration is part of my self-care and fuels my creativity.

What’s next for J’s Breakfast Club? Any new projects, expansions, or dreams on the horizon?
We’re committed to deepening our legacy and expanding our impact—not only here in Gary but in other cities with similar stories. We’re exploring ways to replicate our model in communities where culture, love, and economic development are needed most. J’s has always been about more than food—it’s about faith, hope, and transformation. And we’re just getting started.
