What inspired you to become an entertainer?
I think I was inspired to become an entertainer by my Mom. She is my manager and when I was young she would take me and my brother, Mykal Star around to local events in our hometown, Rock, SC where we would perform. I admire that she had a vision for me even back then. She literally groomed us at an early age to get over our stage fright and perform comfortably in front of any audience. Also, my dad, who is a Pastor and a musician, would play and sing music around the house. Both of my parents and their love for all types of music influenced me as an artist. Now I get to pay it forward with my niece, Isla who sang on my last album, “Stained Glass Windows”.
Tell us about your new project.
I’m so excited about my new single, “God Don’t Cancel Me”. The song is about ‘cancel culture’ and how it’s so important to stay anchored in your faith no matter what adversity or controversy you’re facing. People can be extremely fickle and we all make mistakes. Showing love and extending more grace is so vital. My goal as an artist is never to follow the trends but I love how my latest release is so on-trend and relatable with an inspirational message for everybody.
What keeps you motivated in such a competitive industry?
Being the best version of myself keeps me motivated. As a singer, songwriter and producer I feel like I still have so much more music and art to give the world. My goal has always been to encourage, inspire and heal people through my music. Getting to do that with songs like “God don’t cancel me” is both a privilege and a responsibility that I honor and won’t take for granted.
How do you prepare for a performance?
I’m learning to rest. As an artist, I can be such a perfectionist and a work-a-holic. It’s often hard for me to just breath and be present. I’m working on trusting the process, enjoying my career milestones as they come, and prioritizing my self-care. I’ve become more intentional about my mental health and overall wellness since the pandemic. Also, I’m focusing on making timeless music so that I can continue to perform for years and years to come.
What does success look like for you?
Success is subjective and it seems to be a moving target. I’m learning to be content and find joy while I’m in the pursuit of success. I still have a lot of dreams and goals I want to achieve but I’m also grateful for all of the blessings and professional accomplishments I already have. I hope to leave behind a legacy through my music, create generational wealth for my family, influence pop culture, inspire my peers, and someday mentor other aspiring artists.
Who would you like to perform with and why?
I’ve already worked with some of my all time favorites like the icons Quincy Jones and Karen Clark Sheard of The Clark Sisters! Outside of that, I think it would be incredible to perform with some of the newer top tier artists like Beyonce’ and Bruno Mars. Honestly, I’m grateful that I get to do what I love and I would love to collaborate with other creatives, not just music artists who are also passionate and we mutually admire each other’s work.
Out of all of your music, what is your favorite song to perform and why?
Right now my favorite song to perform is my newest single “God don’t cancel me”. The music is fresh but it also feels like a throwback to some of my earlier work. I’m just having fun, doing what I love. This is definitely a full circle moment for me and I’m grateful that the single has such a timely and much needed message.
What can people expect from you in the next five years?
My fans can expect more great music and overall creativity from me. I’m always stretching myself artistically and exploring as much as I can. I hope to tour worldwide and even dive into the TV and Film industry. I’d love to score and sync music for television and movies. I’d also love to become a professional actor and producer. I feel like I have so much to give and I’m just getting started.
