Why did you become a librarian?

I became a librarian because I fell in LOVE with information. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I did know that I wanted to help people and realized the best way to help people was to help them find the information or provide the information that they need. Information is power, but if you can’t access information, how is one able to obtain that “power” for their life

While technology has become our main flow, why are libraries still important?

Many libraries are the gateway to this new technology. Providing access to technology that many would not be able to afford. Libraries are still important because they have the ability to retain and share knowledge. Without libraries, how would we ever be able to explore new and different worlds, literally and figuratively?

How do you feel about books about African Americans being banned in schools?

I don’t like it. It is a very old way that has played out over the years in America, of Black people being kept from information. From Slavery to Jim Crow to now. It’s a playbook to keep Black people from understanding and knowing their greatness.

Tell us about your documentary.

Yes, our documentary, Are You A Librarian? The Untold Story of Black Librarians is about Black Librarians through historical tribulations to modern-day triumphs. It is a story of resilience and strength and fighting against a system not established for us to read and become literate. It is a story about how we built our own libraries and preserved our own history, and became librarians, and once we’re in the door, we like to kick the door open, not just for us but for everyone.

How can people support your project?

They can support this project by first finding their nearest Black Librarian and telling them THANK YOU! Trust me they go through a lot, and if they want to support the documentary, please check out our GoFundMe page

What does success look like for you?

Success for me is different from what success looks like for this project. Success for me is making sure that my kids have something to leverage for their projects. Success for this project looks like every Black Librarian will hopefully see themselves in this documentary and feel appreciated, loved, and seen. That is what success looks like for both

What would you like your legacy to be?

My legacy, hopefully, would be that Black librarians become more recognized, and eventually, an increase in Black librarianship would be awesome. Black librarians have played a major role in transforming our field, and I would love to see people appreciate this narrative as American history.
