A Guide to Navigating the Holiday Blues with Granny’s Wisdom

The holiday season can be beautiful, full of bright colors and warm gatherings, yet for some, it weaves in some of their toughest moments. I want to offer just a few practical steps to help if you’re feeling the weight of loneliness or the tug of melancholy as the world celebrates.  I can’t take full credit–I am sharing what is inspired by my Granny’s wisdom woven through the pages of “Just Keep Living: Conversations with Granny”

1. Share Stories:  Granny loved telling a good story or joke.  In the book, Granny’s stories become a lifeline for me.  During this holiday, reach out and share your stories with friends or family. Even if it’s over a video call, open up about past holidays, about the people who made them special.

2. Delight in the Little Things: Granny found joy in daily simplicity. Follow her lead. Granny loved a hot cup of tea, first thing in the morning.  She woke up the entire house with that old kettle that whistled as the water got hot.  If we made it for her–and the kettle didn’t whistle she would frown and say, “No, the kettle didn’t whistle loud enough for it to be hot.”   Savor the taste of your morning brew, the texture of your favorite blanket, or the quiet of a snowfall. Let the small moments of contentment be your holiday highlights.

3. Offer Your Presence: The best gift you can give is often just being there. Perhaps you can limit the electronic devices?  Be present with others, offer a listening ear, share in a hobby or a quiet activity together. Your company could be the very thing that turns someone’s holiday around.

4. Laugh Often: Laughter was Granny’s secret ingredient for a full life. Find humor where you can. Watch a comedy, reminisce over funny memories, or play a lighthearted game. Laughter is great medicine for the soul.

5. Speak Openly: Granny never shied away from a good conversation–even when it was a controversial topic. Open up with loved ones about how you’re really feeling. Honesty can open doors to shared experiences and mutual support.  You might be surprised by what you find out.

6. Hold Onto Traditions (or Start New Ones): Traditions keep us tied to our past and each other. If old traditions bring pain, it’s okay to create new ones. Maybe it’s a solo walk to admire the neighborhood lights or a new recipe. Make traditions that comfort you and make you smile.

7. Seek and Offer Support: Granny was practical; she knew when a problem was too big to handle alone. If “it” feels too heavy, reach out for professional support. If you know someone who’s struggling, offer to help them find the resources they need.

I pray these practical steps will help you manage any feelings of holiday depression or loneliness.  Just hold on to Granny’s words and wisdom in “Just Keep Living”.

Remember, it’s perfectly okay to feel a range of emotions during the holidays.  I miss my mom and Granny terribly.  But, I hold onto those memories and I weave pieces of them into the new memories I am making.  This guide isn’t just about battling loneliness or depression; it’s about embracing and managing these feelings as part of the holiday experience. Like Granny, with her rich stories and hearty laughter, let’s find ways to keep living vibrantly, even through the winter’s chill.
