Tell us about your training/education and your company.

I have been a Georgia licensed massage therapist and nationally certified for 12 years.  I also have bachelors degree in general science and certified in performing multiple massage modalities such as Deep Tissue, Sports, Swedish, Prenatal, Neuromuscular, Foot Detox, Lymphatic Drainage, Tabletop Thai, Hot Stone, Cranial Sacral, Spa therapies( Body Wraps and Scubs), Foot and hand Reflexology.  I founded my company Mind Influence Massage in 2009 in Wilmington North Carolina.   I later gained an interested in Atlanta Georgia.  With this move in knew I could reach a larger population and find a culture more suitable to massage as a lifestyle instead of a luxury. Fast forward to today and now I have over 300 clients that I provide therapy for across Atlanta Metropolitan area.  My office is located in Atlantic Station midtown Atlanta.  I provide premier massage services with access to amenities such as a sauna, gym for rehab, steam room, his and her restrooms, with a urban twist. My facility can host spa parties small and large groups also providing mobile table or chair massages for parties, and offices.

The name of my massage business came from the theory of the mind it is about mental processes, thought and consciousness. … Many theories have been put forward to explain the relationship between what we call your mind (defined as the conscious thinking ‘you’ which experiences your thoughts) and your brain which is part of the central nervous system.  I experienced how important it was to deal with pain rehab work school all at the same time It can be a lot but once you have chronic pain you will do almost whatever it takes to remove it.

John Mack

What inspired you to become a massage therapist?

I suffered major injuries as kid and was subjected to taking prescribed narcotics to reduce pain and became dependent on the drug early as a teen.  Best thing that happened is that the prescription ran out because I would have continued taking it with or without pain. Great thing about being young is that I got better but not 100%.  I gained some athletic ability back but very limited in some areas.  I would have never thought I could get any worse.  Then I began getting into six car accidents.   Doctors recommended surgery shortly after being diagnosed.   My body really began to deteriorate.  Despite the surgeons recommendation I chose not to go under the knife.  Fortunately I was able to make a claim with my insurance and I began receiving chiropractic and physical therapy.  I began feeling better but not quite fully recovered then my Chiropractor referred me to the best massage therapist in my area.  I’ve never had a massage before and was nervous and just didn’t believe it could help to the degree of full recovery.  Boy was I wrong.   I felt relieve in all of the areas that I suffered severe pain.  I was impressed by my therapist knowledge, therapy techniques, and communication skills.   My personal experience is as a client who transitioned to become a therapist.  I became a massage therapist because of my experience of pain due to sports injuries, health conditions, and car accidents.  Massage therapy drastically improved my whole body wellness, both physically and psychologically.   In addition to receiving regular massage treatments, I pursued my professional massage license by studying to enhance my ability to deliver quality and symptom, specific massage treatments.

Massage therapy has become very competitive.  What keeps you motivated?

Yes massage is competitive.  I am very passionate about Alternative medicine because of what it did for my life.   In result I encouraged me to stay true to the definition of what a massage therapist is.  Unfortunately the reputation of massage therapy for males has been far from professional.  My approach is to develop a trust with all clients by showcasing my skill set while revealing my personality and sharing my story about recovery mentally and physically. I am motivated by seeing client’s improvements.  I want to make massage therapy a primary health care provider instead of alternative medicine.  Massage has no side effects and it improves mental and physical well being better than any pharmaceuticals ever will.

What are some of the benefits of having a massage?

Receiving frequent massage can reduce or alleviate symptoms of

Ischemia: the lack of blood flow to soft tissues that causes hypersensitivity to touch.

Trigger points: highly irritated points in muscles that refer pain to other parts of the body.

Nerve entrapment/compression: pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone.

Postural distortions: imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes. Longtime poor postural habits are the most common cause of pain from this element.

Biomechanical dysfunction: imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, computer keyboarding, bad mechanics in a golf swing or tennis stroke).

My skill set specializes in rehabbing to alleviate and reduce symptoms of conditions such as: Sciatica, Carpal Tunnel, Rotator Cuff Pain, Scoliosis, Arthritis, Headaches, Migraines, and Plantar Fasciitis

What can someone expect from your massages?

I personalized every massage I do. You can expect a therapeutic massage with luxurious amenities such as a gym, showers,  sauna, and steam room. Each client is unique and I refuse to have a cookie cutter approach.   Ive spent my career improving my knowledge by working with chiropractors, professional athletes, corporate employees, educators, children, college students, surgeons, and luxury spas to understand how to provide care at its best.  Despite all categories of clients having different ailments and onsets they all agree that they want to feel better because stress is universal and removing it can improve overall wellness.

What advice do you have for someone who seeks a career in this industry?

My advice to someone aspiring to be a therapist is to practice what you preach.  Receive a massage as frequently as possible.  Go to the best massage schools that will make you accountable.
Exclusively research your areas best therapist to trade or pay for professional massages.  This will elevate your knowledge on how to become one of the best licensed therapists. If you want to be a massage therapist you have to educate yourself on health wellness and the psychology of people.  Engaging in social interaction with clients and other practitioners can assist with identifying the best way to provide therapy

Where would you like to see your business in the next five years?

I see my business becoming a regional provider. Next want to partner with other male and female therapist to expand our services to corporate offices and fitness centers.  I also want to hire other great independent therapist and office assistants to assist me with marketing to heal Atlanta one person at a time.  I will later petition health care insurance providers to add massage therapy as an incentive for healthy lifestyle choices.
