What is Diabetes?

The following symptoms of diabetes are typical. However, some people with diabetes have symptoms so mild that they go unnoticed.

Common symptoms of diabetes:

  • Urinating often
  • Feeling very thirsty
  • Feeling very hungry—even though you are eating
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
  • Weight loss—even though you are eating more (type 1)
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)

The American Diabetes Association® (ADA) updates its Standards of Care in Diabetes annually so that people with diabetes get the most effective evidence-based treatment from their doctors. 

This guide, Your Rights and Care Standards: A Guide for People with Type 2 Diabetes, is based on these standards and was created to help you feel confident and informed about your treatment plan, including key questions to ask your healthcare team so you can take charge of your health.

This guide focuses on three key pillars of type 2 diabetes management:

  • Medical support and care (for both body and mind)
  • Healthy eating
  • Physical activity

This collection provides an abridged version of the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA’s) Standards of Care in Diabetes—2026 designed especially for primary care professionals. Developed by the ADA’s Primary Care Advisory Group*, this new resource contains the evidence-based clinical practice recommendations most pertinent to primary care—all presented in a user-friendly format. Its recommendations are substantively the same as in the complete ADA Standards of Care, but presented in succinct bullet points and helpful graphics.
