What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

I started my entrepreneurial journey at the age of 7 years old. Growing up in New York City, I remember going into a black-owned candy store and asking how they got their business started. I wanted to be just like them! So I sold candy, designed clothes and eventually created the brand we all know today as BareSkin USA.

During the pandemic, I lost both my jobs and, as a single mother of two, had a moment of reflection. I wanted to create a product that not only helped others, but could also join me on a self-care journey. Having suffered from acne my entire life, I aimed to create a solution that would work for my skin type and others.

About

Chanise Gibbs, founder of BareSkin USA and skincare product formulator, who overcame fear and doubt in the face of the pandemic to pursue her dreams. With two sons to provide for, she bravely stepped into entrepreneurism and created a natural and organic skincare company. Her passion and hard work are truly inspiring!

As a token of her visit to one of the first free towns in the Americas, she brought back coffee beans from Palenque, Colombia. Though she was not a coffee lover, she wanted to share her experience with her friends and family. She decided to grind up the beans and make a decadent Colombian Coffee Scrub – made from fresh coffee beans, coconut oil, and sugar.

Using natural ingredients, she formulated products that are gentle enough for teenage skin yet highly effective in keeping acne at bay. These products are rich in botanical oils, antioxidants, and vitamins known to nourish skin and reduce inflammation. By balancing hydration and targeting bacteria, the products encourage the skin to heal and function optimally, leaving skin clearer and balanced.

Chanise founded BareSkin USA in 2020 with one goal in mind: to tell the story of the African diaspora through ingredients sourced from all over the world. Her mission is to reconnect melanated people with their roots and to promote self-care by bringing meaningful ingredients to her customers. All are inspired by love, understanding of our collective histories, and storytelling through skincare.
