What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Entrepreneurship is something that has been in me since I was a kid. My first business was a yard cutting service when I was 12. My mother had a friend that worked as a paralegal. She helped me write a contract that stated nobody could cut the client’s grass, not even them, but I guaranteed it cut. I had different prices depending on the size of the yard $20, $30, $40. I had about 9 people on that contract. I usually keep a decent job, but I never stop having different businesses on the side. When I made the decision to go back to school to get my masters of social work in 2019, I started Arts By Ced to help supplement my income. It has been my longest sustaining venture yet. Once I’m done with the requirements needed to start a private practice, I intend on implementing therapy sessions as a part of Arts By Ced’s services.
What does success look like for you?
I think of success as a mindset. When I graduated high school, I felt successful. When I got my DD 214 that said Honorable on it, I felt successful. When I make it to the bathroom on time, I feel successful. Even now, being in a position where I have the knowledge and the ability to help people, gives me a feeling of success. I may not possess many of the riches the World has to offer, but I feel success all the time.
Tell us about something that you had to overcome.
I had to overcome my own mind. For a long time, I didn’t think that a certain lifestyle was for me. When I got out the military, I was lost. I know now that my leadership failed me during my discharge. I had the thought that once I was out the military, the government was throwing me away. I didn’t even know I was a Veteran. I thought you had to retire or lose a leg to get that title. I resorted back to my natural entrepreneurial spirit, just not in the most honest ways. I thought that this was the best chance I had at life. I had to overcome that thought process and truly understand the endlessness of opportunities available. I had to understand that I was able change my environment and my circumstances as long as I had a plan and the focus. I had to understand that I was the one playing defense on myself. Once my mind and my body got on the same team, I began accomplishing my goals.
What does being a veteran mean to you?
When I see a Veteran, I see someone that was a part of something much bigger than them. At one point in their life, they were a part of the same collective unit as myself. Regardless of the branch, rank, or duty; we shared the same thoughts and fears at some point. We have all been in a position where we helped a stranger in some manner, just because they were wearing a military uniform. Some of us have a distaste for the military and some of us love the military. Regardless of which, we all had to do pushups because some strange and angry person told us too. Being a Veteran means there is an entire community of people that understand me and I want to help as many of them as I can.
