Cervical Cancer Awareness Month is observed annually in January and marks a time dedicated to spreading awareness about cervical cancer, its symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of preventive measures. Here are seven facts you should know about cervical cancer:

  1. Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina.
  2. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally.
  3. Cervical cancer is frequently linked to persistent infection with high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). While HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection, not all strains of the virus lead to cervical cancer.
  4. Common symptoms of cervical cancer include abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, and unusual vaginal discharge.
  5. Regular screenings, such as Pap smears and HPV tests, play a crucial role in detecting abnormalities in the cervix before cancer develops. In many cases, cervical cancer is preventable and treatable when detected early.
  6. Persistent HPV infection, a weakened immune system, smoking, long-term use of oral contraceptives, and a family history of cervical cancer are among the risk factors for cervical cancer.
  7. Both young girls and boys can receive the HPV vaccine as early as nine years old. The vaccine is given in two doses and is available for men and women up to age 45 years of age to provide protection against some of the most common cancer-causing strains of HPV.

The Foundation for Women’s Cancer is committed to helping individuals understand the symptoms and risk factors associated with cervical cancer and the screening and treatment options available to prevent this disease. Visit the official FWC website to access and download our free resource Cervical Cancer: Your Guide in three languages, including English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. Regular screenings, vaccination, and adopting a healthy lifestyle can contribute to the prevention of cervical cancer, ultimately saving lives and fostering a community of empowered individuals.
