Wicked came roaring into theaters this weekend, and left us breathless. What an introduction in the lives and the unlikely friendship of Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, through their school days and rooming together. Initially, all Glinda wants is to be the most popular.
Elphaba is green, which horrifies everyone initially. That’s a burden and the hatred of her father she has carried from birth because her father blames her for her mother’s death and her sister legs not been strong enough for her to walk, because he didn’t want her to be green like her sister, Nessarose, played by Marissa Brodie, so they fed her extra milk.
The casting is absolutely on spot and the story unfolds in such a way that you are inexplicable drawn in to this story, that you cannot wait for the next scene. This is an outstanding rendition of the life of the Wicked Witch, Elphaba, and how she was essentially forced into the decisions she made. The ancillary development is friendship that was formed with Glinda, who became the good witch. The story shows how being different, green can shape you.
We highly recommend this fascinating story that will touch audiences to the core. A five-star hit! It will exceed your expectations.
But, first let’s go to the beginning, which pays homage to the Wizard of Oz, which will happen later, but let’s go back to the Wicked story. There is a malevolent evil that is fomenting distrust in the class room and playing on the prejudices of the study and manipulating Elphaba to use her gifts to find out who is attempting to get the animals to not talk anymore and putting them back in cages. This she abhors angrily, she doesn’t realize that at the school, she is been manipulated by Madame Morrible, played by Michelle Yeogh, who realizes that Elphaba wants to meet the Wizard, so she promises her that she will introduce her to the Wizard, played by Jeff Goldblum. Because of Elphaba has this uncontrollable desire to meet the Wizard, she easily falls into their trap.
Little does she now is that they want her to read the spells from the magic book that they cannot open or read, then they would take over, but when she doesn’t want to do evil – they attempt to kill her, which backfires in a huge way. Her powers just continue to multiply with the help of Glinda, who stays with her friend and help her to unleash her tremendous powers. Her magic gives the monkeys wings who always wanted to fly. The Wizard sends them and the guards to kill her because she is an enemy of the state. Glinda tells her that with her powers she can do anything, but she doesn’t have wings. But wait, the broomstick that they use to barricade the door comes to her as the guards attempt to break down the door, Glinda finds a cape for her and she flies out of Emerald City and controls the flying monkey – Everyone Deserves the Chance To Fly!! Her powers are immense.
Madame Morrible , the master manipulator, takes Glinda to give her powers to combat Elphaba, but they are friends and Glinda is good, who was very superficial but always was a good person. The underlying theme shows how we all can be manipulated.
The spectacular ending leaves us waiting to see WICKED Part 2, but not wanting this story end, which it hasn’t, then eventually to the Wizard Of Oz.
Do not miss this once in a lifetime story. Highly recommend.
